In the heart of the 🌿 Konkan region of India grows a miracle fruit — Kokum (Garcinia indica). Rich in antioxidants and prized for its cooling, healing properties, Kokum has been part of traditional diets and remedies for centuries.
But while the market for “superfoods” grows worldwide, the women farmers who nurture this fruit—from remote, tribal communities—see little to no benefit.

We’re a local non-profit collaborating with 5 villages in the Konkan belt, focusing on tribal women who have the skill, passion, and dedication—but lack infrastructure and market access.

Risks & Challenges
Every grassroots initiative comes with its unique challenges. We’ve identified the following key risks and are actively working to mitigate them: 🌦️ Seasonal Supply Variability Risk: Kokum is a seasonal fruit, harvested primarily between April and June. Mitigation: We plan to establish cold storage and bulk drying practices during peak season to ensure year-round production capability. 🏷️ Regulatory Hurdles Risk: Navigating food safety, FSSAI labeling, and local distribution regulations can cause delays. Mitigation: We’re partnering with local legal advisors and following established protocols to ensure compliance from day one. 🧑🏽💻 Technology Adoption Barriers Risk: While we aim to introduce QR-code-based supply chain transparency, some community members may face a learning curve. Mitigation: We’ll provide hands-on training, and the tech components will remain optional and additive—ensuring that no participant is left behind.

Anita Kale is a grassroots women’s rights advocate with over 15 years of experience organizing and empowering tribal self-help groups across Maharashtra. From education and healthcare access to rural entrepreneurship, she has led transformative community programs across the Konkan region. At Kokum Collective, Anita serves as the Community Organizer, guiding 25+ tribal women in building sustainable livelihoods through solar-powered beverage production and leadership development rooted in local knowledge.
